With a GDP of $ 69 Bn and an area of 15,643 km2 (6,040 sq miles) Pune is a sprawling city in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It was once the base of the Peshwas (prime ministers) of the Maratha Empire, which lasted from 1674 to 1818. It is the central seat of indigenous Marathi culture and ethos, in which education, arts and crafts, and theatres flourish. It is the birthplace of the poet-saint Tukaram (in Dehu) and Jnaneshvara (in Alandi), the author of the well-known commentary 'Jnaneshwari',on the “Bhagavad Gita”.
